Call to Action: Send a letter opposing SB 202 to the Indiana House Education committee

We must take immediate action to prevent the passage of Indiana Senate Bill 202.

Send a letter to the Indiana House Education Committee Here!

The bill is bad news for students, staff, and faculty in public universities in Indiana—and will damage the strong reputation of these institutions. Please add your contact information to send your letter so that our legislators hear, loud and strong, that the people of Indiana oppose this bill, which will:

  • Give politicians power over faculty in the classroom and in their research;
  • Make it harder to recruit and retain top faculty;
  • Threaten researchers’ ability to receive federal funding on many topics where the “broader impact” of the research is assessed;
  • Threaten accreditation of medical and nursing schools which have DEI components in order to demonstrate the ability to provide care to all Hoosiers;
  • Reduce freedom of students and faculty to discuss ideas across the ideological spectrum; Increase work for Boards of Trustees, administrators, and faculty committees, who will now have to review hundreds of faculty dossiers every year;
  • Reduce alumni representation on Boards of Trustees at Ball State, Indiana University, Indiana State University, Purdue University, University of Southern Indiana;
  • Require additional unfunded reporting mechanisms and bureaucracy, thus burdening administrations and staff professionals.

This bill is moving quickly during a short session of the State Legislature. This set of letters is going to the House Education Committee members in time for their vote on Wednesday Feb 17, 2024.

It’s crucial that we are heard. Please add your name and information—and any additional messages—so that your representative understands how important this is. And then please share this with your friends. Legislators do pay attention to emails and letters, especially if they come in large numbers.
